Commingle

The method of collecting waste where certain types of materials are all placed in the same recycling bin is known as commingling. This material is collected by Capital City Waste Services and later sorted at the Collection Centre into specific waste streams. We can provide appropriately sized commingling bins to your home or office and can  arrange collection at a time convenient to you.

 What Can Be Commingled?

Commingled bins are restricted to certain types of materials for recycling.  These include:

  • Plastic bottles and glass jars
  • Steel and aluminium cans
  • Food and beverage containers, including milk cartons

At our Collection Centre, the commingled material is sorted either by machinery or by hand and it is therefore important that the material is not contaminated with anything that could cause damage to the sorting machinery or injury to our workers.

By reading and observing the Recycling Information label on the lid of the bin before disposing of material, damage and injuries can be avoided. Some types of metals, glass and plastics cannot be recycled and should not be placed in this bin.If this information is properly complied with, you can be assured that your waste will be successfully recycled and will not end up as landfill.

What Happens to Commingled Waste?
On arrival at our Collection Centre, the waste is first decontaminated and then sorted, either by machine or by hand, into specific waste streams.  These individual streams are then bundled and sent to resource manufacturers for recycling. Aluminiumcans can be recycled over and over again to make new cans.  The metal in steel cans can be reclaimed and remanufactured into new food and drink can, bicycles and even bridges.  PET bottles find a new life as detergent bottles, clear packing film or in clothing and upholstery.

Capital City Waste Servicesdoes its very best to make sure that your recycled products are not condemned to landfill.  To make the best use of your recycled household waste and to assist us to ensure that all your waste can be recycled, please use the bins only for the purpose for which they are intended and place in them only those products which can be effectively reclaimed.
